Q & A Time

Will's question was ....

James Elkins invites us to take a second look at “ordinary” objects that we often ignore because we view these things as commonplace. What are some of the “ordinary” objects from your surroundings that you think deserve a closer examination?

There are many "ordinary" things in my surroundings that need a closer examination and as I walk to class on the quad I think I need to have more of a better look at all the landscape and architecture of the buildings...After four years all I've done is go straight to class, trying to zoom and weave through people so I can get to class in time but I've never actually just sat on the quad and looked at everything around me. I can barely tell you where each building is and I don't even know if there are trees on the quad which makes me kind of sad because I'm graduating in May and I feel like I don't know much about my campus.

Other ordinary things that I come across are even just the appliances in my own apartment. I just use them and never actually take the time to think what I would do without those items. This year was the first year we got dvr in our apartment and honestly I don't know how I lived without it before...I've never thought about how it actually works or why we ever thought about thinking about inventing this...I guess remediation comes into play here. Haha! But anyways other appliances such as the refrigerator or the toaster are just items that we use all the time.

It is so weird that we use all these items everyday and never actually think about them and just continue to use them without a thought!
