The University of Illinois is considered to have one of the biggest Greek systems out of all the colleges in the United States. When students first come to college they don’t know what to expect or what clubs to join. For many students joining a fraternity or a sorority is at the top of their list because they are bombarded by members of these chapters on Quad Day or even when they go to parties people usually ask if they are planning on joining one or if they are already in one. But is “Greek life” really what it’s cracked up to be?
For my graffiti stencil I chose to do a statue of a guy sitting and thinking and within it, it says “Go Greek?” I’m currently in a sorority and when I first came to college I thought I had to join one because everyone else was going to as well or all my friends that already went here were in one. I wish I would have put more thought into joining one before I did, but I feel like students on our campus are rushed into these decisions right away since they have to “rush” or join within the first month of school. I had to graffiti my stencil a couple of times because with the letters it was somewhat difficult to keep them white. But in the end, I think it turned out pretty nice. I would display this all around campus especially in the beginning of the school year when people are thinking about what they should become involved in.
I’m not discouraging people from joining a fraternity or a sorority by any means but I want people to just think about their decisions carefully. Yes, joining greek like will introduce you to many new people and for some people, it allows to them have many leadership roles within their house that may look good on their resumes, but there are also many downfalls that students aren’t aware when becoming part of the greek system that they should also consider. For example, you have to pay a lot of money to be in a house and half the time you don’t know where that money is going. Also, when paying for social events, you have to pay those dues whether or not if you go to an event. Many people that aren’t part of a house think that people in the greek system are paying for their friends and at times I can see that because I barely know anyone in the house other than the people in my pledge class. Also, it is very time consuming and there are many mandatory meetings that you must attend and if you don’t attend them you might get fined which sucks to begin with. I feel that since I’m a senior I’ve already vested so much money and time into my sorority, that it would be stupid for me to deactivate, I have had fun during the past four years but if I were to go back to my freshman year all over again and see a sign that said “Go Greek?” I probably would not have joined one.
