McKee states that “silence does not exist,” then she claims that even though noise is absent we feel the presence of silence. Then how would you describe silence, as a feeling or a lack of sound? Give examples.
Even when I'm alone and everything is silent, no tv, no music or anything, I still feel noise but it's a different kind of noise. It's kind of hard to explain but I love the sound of silence. I feel like everything has just stopped and for that brief moment there is a calm, feeling like serenity. It's very peaceful and I don't think there is a lack of sound what so ever. Silence can be one of the most powerful sounds out there even if there is nothing going on. One thing I don't like about it being silent, is that there is never really silence because you can hear almost everything like a clock ticking or crickets outside and those can be some of the most annoying sounds ever. So we can feel the presence of silence but like McKee states, "silence does not exist." I agree with this completely and it is very hard to explain in words but if you take the time to actually listen to silence, you will be able to feel it.

Questions
1. Sound is a big part of our life. Name a time when you turned everything off such as the tv, radio, computer etc. and actually listened to what else is around you. Did you notice a big difference?
2. Have you ever wondered how sound is made? What do u think are the different steps or processes put into making particular sounds in a movie, a song or television show?
3. Have you ever put captioning on when watching a movie or television? Do you find yourself watching the words more or listening to people talk? Why do you think this happens?

My Reactions of Picture Essays
Will-His picture essay has to do with a little girl that likes the color pink and has a lot of toys. I think its kind of a process of her life or rountine in a day because it starts in the morning and works its way through to bedtime. The picture essay was obvious at first but to think of it at another perspective, its nice to see it through what the person is actually seeing.
Sam-After looking at her pictures it looks like all the different places on campus at first but then I was confused when ter ewere a lot of pictures of bikes and coffee. I think the pictures represent her life at U of I and how school spirited she is and the people she has come across with during her time here.
Ryan-When I saw his pictures I thought to myself that he likes taking a lot of pictures of himself because every other picture was him alone. He also knows a lot of girls because there are also girls in almost every picture.
Roberto-I think his pictures were about a day of going to class and then going back to his place and going home to sleep.
Raul- With his pictures, he is documenting his friend's day and what he does through out that day.
Mark- His pictures look cold and remind me of that one poem I think its called footprints in the sand. But his pictures show his footprints in the snow. I think he is on a trip because there was a picture of a hotel that he took.
Octavio- He is capturing himself eating a lot of food while he is sitting at his computer.
Liz-Different parts of the body is what i gathered from her pictures because there are pictures of people's eyes, mouth, fingers and feet. Also different facial expressions or movements are captured.
Grace-Her pictures are of someone that is about to work out or is an athlete because there are weights and vitamins and water.
Erin-I think her pictures had to deal with things that can harm a person or how bad society is.
David- I didn't rally know what to think of his pictures..I feel that his pictures showed a sense of urgency or how fast paced our world is with the pictures of the road and traffic lights.
Bill-His pictures remind me of something enchanted especially when the girl is along side the brick wall or looking through the white pillar shaped towers. Even when she is walking through the rows of trees. It's like a journey of girl that is trying to find herself.
Dan k-It was very different to see pictures that were drawn, like a comic book.. I don't know what kind of story he was trying to tell but I feel like it had to do with how people react with the world and city because there were a bunch of overshots of the city.
Dan B- Its very dark but there are different angles that each picture is taken and i think he is taking pictures of musical instruments like a guitar. His story seems like a night or the process of what goes into a concert or practice.
Cynthia-Her pciture seem to resemble how she has grown up and what she sees in life. She has pictures of sunsets and trees but i don't know how that correlates...It could possibly show how the day goes vs her life.
Adam-He took pictures of a stuffed animal going through situations that people do in real life. it was very interesting to see how he put this animal in the picture.
Sean-I actually know a lot of people in those pictures but it shows him drinking all night and having fun with his friends.
Sara-She took a lot of pictures of famous people and what was cool about it was how she took pictures of magazine pictures. There were different magazines so she showed different advertisements and how each portrayed to that magazine.
Masha-Her pictures start off with taking a wide picture of the scenery and then slowly focusing in on one person. She continues to keep zooming in on this person.

Picture Essay
To be honest, I really don’t know if I liked this project. At first I had no idea what I wanted to do which was my first difficulty of this whole thing. Then when I was out on Tuesday night, I thought it would have been a great idea to document a night out with my friends, but that ended up being a drunken mess and I thought to myself that it would be best to not document that night. The pictures would have been funny though. Then I tried to think of other ideas, but everything that I thought of seemed stupid. I finally came up with documenting my last night working at Buffalo Wild Wings. After 3 long years, it would be great to take pictures of my last closing shift bartending. Well, little did I know there was an Illini game. I was kind of frusterated in the beginning because I was hoping for an easy, laid back last shift, but I was wrong. We ended up being really busy even though it was a low scoring game and we lost. I felt that the pictures I took represented a big part of my college life because the people that I worked with ended up becoming my family along with all the regulars that come in all the time. However, taking pictures from my iphone was not the greatest device to use but I had nothing else since I recently just broke my 2nd camera. I tried to take pictures of things or events that I would come across on a regular shift and not just that night. Everyone thought I was crazy because they had no idea what I was doing until I tried to explain it them. Also, I tried to take more realistic pictures and more actions pictures but it was hard because people would try and pose for the camera.
After reading Berger, I realize where he is coming from when he says, “Images were first made to conjure up the appearances of something that was absent. Gradually became evident that an image could outlast what it represented.” These pictures might not be understood by everyone but to me it means a whole lot more than what meets the eye. It is kind of a conclusion to another chapter in my life because I’ve been there for so long that it was time for me to leave and when I was looking back on these pictures, I was actually sad because it showed the last time I would be closing there. I’ll miss working all the Illini games and being with everyone that I worked with but these pictures to someone else might see something completely different. They might just see random people and signs of beer specials and think nothing of it and probably won’t remember them. Pictures tend to lose their value or uniqueness after awhile too. For example, the picture of the final score of the game was a lot more depressing in the moment and now looking back at the picture, it’s just a bunch of numbers that probably won’t mean anything a week from now. In the end, I’m glad I captured my last night working because it’s pictures that I understand and mean something to me that I wanted to share with others.

Answer to this weeks question!
Bill stated, "With multiple televisions in every home in America , and hundreds of channels to watch, television advertisement has become the main form of advertisement. While people are constantly bombarded with multiple images of different products every 10 to 15 minutes during their television program, new inventions are allowing us to circumvent the need to view commercials. Things such as TIVO or DVR are making it so we can fast forward through commercials, a high school German teacher of mine told me that in Germany the commercials are all condensed into a 5-10 minute block in the middle of the show, like an intermission almost. I am not sure if that is still the way it is done there, but regardless with the way television advertisement is going are we going to see new forms of it? An increase in traditional billboards and public/outdoors advertisement? Will product placement become even more prevalent in shows? One thought I had was a fixed image on the screen for a set period of time, regardless of fast forwarding it will always be there, but it would be a nuisance to those without TIVO so thankfully I think it will be awhile before that occurs!"
Bill has a very good point about how everyone that has TIVO or DVR tends to fast forward through comercials and that we end up seeing less and less advertisements. I know that I'm one of those people that do that and I've noticed in television shows they have begun using product placement through out their shows. For example, with 90210, almost every scene that a character was eating or drinking something, there was can of Dr Pepper on the table or there was an advertisement of it in the background that you could still clearly see. Other shows have also incoporated contests or fundraisers of a product in their show like One Tree Hill having their Sunkist music contest or something of that sort. I feel that we will slowly start seeing more advertisements in shows because people are fast fowarding through comercials and not seeing these advertisements.
I can't think of other forms that televisions will have to show more advertisements and I think that it would be annoying to see a fixed image on the bottom of the screen. I feel that with our economy being so bad, that there might not be an increase of billboards with advertisements or magazine with ads. However, we might see more ads on the internet because I feel that it is easier and cheaper to post something on there. One suggestion that advertisers can do is, post their ads up on the tv guide thing that people have with on demand or whatever they have. At least it will be there and the consumer might happen to catch a glimpse of it.

Q&A week 5
1. Berger states, "The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe." What does he mean by this and give one example.
2. Berger also says "Images were first made to conjure up the appearances of something that was absent. Gradually became evident that an image could outlast what it represented;" Think of one photograph or picture that you see everyday and explain why you think it was taken in the first place, what you see now and lastly what other might see.
3. Think of an image that has been recreated and has lost it's value or uniqueness.

Answer to Bill's Question
1. Reading this article immediately made me think of Chinese Characters. The way I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong, is that they do not have an alphabet, but instead use characters to represent what they are saying. Individuals that learn from this kind of alphabet, or a similar one, do you feel that they are better able to handle the transition to our text books if they come to learn in the states, or anywhere else that uses the "western" form of writing. Basically which is easier going from theres to ours or ours to theres, and what would be some problems/implications in both?
I think it would be a lot easier for us to learn other peoples language because our English language is very difficult to learn because there are so many different syllables or meanings for each word. It may be hard to learn Chinese or any other language for that matter, but I think memorizing or seeing different Chinese characters will be easier to learn for people that already speak English. When my family first came from the Philippines, my grandma would always tell me that is was so hard for her to learn the English language and to this day she still has hard time pronouncing some words. I also found it easier to learn the Spanish language because one letter would only have one way of saying it or it was pretty obvious. Any language will be hard to learn but from what I see going to U of I, there is a language barrier from people that are across the world because they can't speak English but when my friends are taking classes like Arabic or Italian, they seem to learn it pretty quickly.

This week's questions!!
1. Wysocki talks about how each writer or author use their text to catch the audiences eye, when you're in line at the grocery store or at the book store what certain texts or words catch your eye and why? What texts discourge you from reading it?
2. He also talks about how writing has changed over time with size, lettering etc, give examples of these?
3. Children's texts are completely different than young adult texts or even adults texts for that matter, why do you think writer's change their way of writing with each audience? (Honestly I would rather read something that has large text in a children's book with color then an adult text book that is boring and in black and white.)

Graffiti Stencil Project
The University of Illinois is considered to have one of the biggest Greek systems out of all the colleges in the United States. When students first come to college they don’t know what to expect or what clubs to join. For many students joining a fraternity or a sorority is at the top of their list because they are bombarded by members of these chapters on Quad Day or even when they go to parties people usually ask if they are planning on joining one or if they are already in one. But is “Greek life” really what it’s cracked up to be?
For my graffiti stencil I chose to do a statue of a guy sitting and thinking and within it, it says “Go Greek?” I’m currently in a sorority and when I first came to college I thought I had to join one because everyone else was going to as well or all my friends that already went here were in one. I wish I would have put more thought into joining one before I did, but I feel like students on our campus are rushed into these decisions right away since they have to “rush” or join within the first month of school. I had to graffiti my stencil a couple of times because with the letters it was somewhat difficult to keep them white. But in the end, I think it turned out pretty nice. I would display this all around campus especially in the beginning of the school year when people are thinking about what they should become involved in.
I’m not discouraging people from joining a fraternity or a sorority by any means but I want people to just think about their decisions carefully. Yes, joining greek like will introduce you to many new people and for some people, it allows to them have many leadership roles within their house that may look good on their resumes, but there are also many downfalls that students aren’t aware when becoming part of the greek system that they should also consider. For example, you have to pay a lot of money to be in a house and half the time you don’t know where that money is going. Also, when paying for social events, you have to pay those dues whether or not if you go to an event. Many people that aren’t part of a house think that people in the greek system are paying for their friends and at times I can see that because I barely know anyone in the house other than the people in my pledge class. Also, it is very time consuming and there are many mandatory meetings that you must attend and if you don’t attend them you might get fined which sucks to begin with. I feel that since I’m a senior I’ve already vested so much money and time into my sorority, that it would be stupid for me to deactivate, I have had fun during the past four years but if I were to go back to my freshman year all over again and see a sign that said “Go Greek?” I probably would not have joined one.

Graffiti Art

I wasn't able to get a chance and look at graffiti around campus but when I was looking online I personally liked this picture of graffiti in a tunnel...even though some graffiti is bad or it's wrong, it is sometimes tasteful to the eye. I always like looking under bridges or passing buildings while I'm driving and looking at the graffiti because it's better to look at than just a plain wall. This picture just makes it look like something fast just drove by but it's really the sun light shining through and you're able to see the graffiti on the wall.
Q & A Time
Will's question was ....
James Elkins invites us to take a second look at “ordinary” objects that we often ignore because we view these things as commonplace. What are some of the “ordinary” objects from your surroundings that you think deserve a closer examination?
There are many "ordinary" things in my surroundings that need a closer examination and as I walk to class on the quad I think I need to have more of a better look at all the landscape and architecture of the buildings...After four years all I've done is go straight to class, trying to zoom and weave through people so I can get to class in time but I've never actually just sat on the quad and looked at everything around me. I can barely tell you where each building is and I don't even know if there are trees on the quad which makes me kind of sad because I'm graduating in May and I feel like I don't know much about my campus.
Other ordinary things that I come across are even just the appliances in my own apartment. I just use them and never actually take the time to think what I would do without those items. This year was the first year we got dvr in our apartment and honestly I don't know how I lived without it before...I've never thought about how it actually works or why we ever thought about thinking about inventing this...I guess remediation comes into play here. Haha! But anyways other appliances such as the refrigerator or the toaster are just items that we use all the time.
It is so weird that we use all these items everyday and never actually think about them and just continue to use them without a thought!

Questions for reading
I really liked these readings this week because it actually made me think about all the things we pass everyday and don't even take a second glance at it. We see words all over the place and we obey to them like the reading said, like a sign that says STOP or Caution, and then we go about the rest of our day like it never happened. It's weird how we take things for advantage these days, like the sunset or bridges or even grass which is all around us. So my questions this week are....
1. Over the past couple of years that we have been at the U of I, take a look back and think of one thing that you see on a daily basis and never actually thought about it and describe how it makes you feel or what you actually think of it in general. It can be a building, the new bell or anything...
2. They're always those little games that people play where we have to count how many times we see the word "of" or another word, but we always seem to miss one or two of them hidden in the paragraph, why do we do that? Is it because we don't take the time to actually look in between the lines because we're always in such a hurry or do we just miss it on accident?
3. Lastly, when I was reading the two articles it made me think of the wall that is in Washington D.C. with all the names of past soldiers, veterans that have died in the many wars that we have had, do you wonder if people actually think about those names on the wall and think about those lives that have been lost for us or is it just a name on a wall?
