project!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3XxySz1-qQ

Final Project

The process of our project wasn’t very complicated. We had the visual rhetoric theory. In order to portray this theory, Cynthia and I interviewed various people asking them what they thought of when they first saw the certain advertisements presented to them. We then continued to ask them questions pertaining to the advertisements and what can help get the message across, more visual or texts. I interviewed people about the advertisements that were newer while Cynthia asked people to evaluate the older or more vintage looking advertisements. With our theory of visual rhetoric we wanted to show how advertisements have changed over time and how depending on the genre of the advertisement that visuals or texts have more of an effect on what people see. At first, I thought this project would be a lot easier, but it is harder to tie a movie in with a theory. With our video we open it up with a lot of older looking ads and then use all the people that Cynthia asked after that. We then proceeded to use the people who were shown the newer advertisements and end it was various new advertisements to tie the video together. With the theory presented by Kress, we wanted to get the idea of different genres of advertisements being presented at different times. With the editing process part of the project, Cynthia used a imovie and iphoto to put the advertisements we asked the people about as still images in it with captions. We ended the video with a bunch of different billboard advertisements. A lot of people know that when an advertisement of snow and polar bears during Christmas time, means it is related to Coca Cola or that a lot of advertisements use a lot of sex to get their point across even if they barely have the product presented in the advertisement. Also, most advertisements that contain half naked women with beer in the background or a big hamburger are presented in men’s magazines and diamond rings are shown in magazines directed towards woman. Advertisers know not where to place certain ads and direct toward the audience that will most beneficial to them. Before all of this, advertisements were a lot different and didn’t have a lot of sex in their ads. They actually had the product in the ad because that’s what they were selling and not try to show a hidden meaning or have people guess at what it means. It was just plain and simple for everyone to understand. Even with the Got Milk! Ads, people still knew what the ads were fore but they said that it would be better if the people were actually holding a glass of milk. Also with these ads, they used celebrities because they want people to have the mentality that if someone that is famous is drinking milk, they should too. Like everything else such as computers, television, and cell phones, we feel that advertisements have also been remediated. They have changed greatly over time where they have one word and people will supposedly understand the advertisement or people will just buy it because it will make them be cool or sexy if they use the product advertised. With visual rhetoric, advertisers have learned how to put just a single visual and one word to sell a product. There are times though where there does need to be more texts in order for the audience to get the message and that why we tried to ask people what would help get the message across with the ads better. In the end, the project turned out very nice.

Project Proposal

Visual Rhetoric Theory-Cynthia and Teri

Our project will be focusing on media and how text, visual images and genre plays an important part in what people see. The readings from Visual Rhetoric in a Digital World gave many good examples on how our world has changed over time. In this class we’ve learned to show how media or images can have a different meaning when there is a lot of text or none at all. Sometimes media doesn’t have to have text at all to get the meaning across but at the same time one word can make a difference in whether a person understands it all. Also, the location or how the media is presented is also key. A company selling men’s hair products obviously wouldn’t place an advertisement in Cosmopolitan which is clearly directed towards woman. According to Hill, one needs to ensure that verbal, visual and oral illiteracies are all equal and one mode does not isolate the others. We also agree with this because sometimes there can be too much texts or visuals in an ad that takes away from the media itself.
In Kress’ reading, “we live in a new communicational world and that there are now choices about how what is to be represented should be represented in what mode, in what genre, in what ensembles of modes of genres and on what occasions.” The reading also stated that everything has a purpose and different meanings behind what is represented by the colors people choose or where the writing or visual is placed in particular media. In order to show this, Cynthia and I propose to make a video documenting how media has changed over the past few years in advertisements and how it affects our daily activities. We plan to show different advertisements in magazines, television and billboards and show how the location or the design of it gets the meaning across clearly. We will relate the visual rhetoric theory with this because people walk by certain things everyday and never really think about what they see and actually analyze it. We will probably interview people and show them an ad or image and see if they understand it or ask them if there should be more visuals or text to make it more clear. This theory is very interesting because in the book, they used an example of how Microsoft word uses images on their tool bar instead of words for all of it and how it makes so much of a difference or even on a web page. If a web page takes too long downloading all the images, people usually just go to another one. At different times, visuals are more helpful than actually seeing the word right there in front of you. With our video, we want to show how this does make a difference in people lives and affects their daily activities whether they realize it or not. Our video will be more of a documentary of how media has changed over time by how things are designed a certain way.

We plan on working together with filming different people and advertisements as well as the editing. Our project will be equally split.

GAMES

I don't really play many games online but the one I do like is TwistText. Basically, they give you a bunch of letters and you try and make as many words as possible. It is a very simple game to play but you actually use your brain instead of other games where you shoot characters. I'm not really into the violent games but more games like this. http://games.yahoo.com/console/tx

Questions

1. Describe what medium is according to the author. Do you agree with this definition or if not what do you think medium is?

2. The author says that remediation doesn't end after leaving a movie theater because we are surrounded by posters, computer games and videoscreens. Can you give another example of where remediation doesn't "end" when it's finished?

3. According to the author, "The goal is not to replace the earlier forms to which the company may own rhe rights. bur rather to spread the content over as many markets as possible, Each of those forms takes part of its meaning from the other products in a process of honorific remediation and at the same time makes a tacit claim to offer an experience that the other forms cannot." Do you think this is true or do you feel that media and technology has gotten out of hand?

4. How do writers, directors, actors, video game designers show their success of remediation?

Video Project Process

Our video is posted on Sean's blog.

This was a fun project. It was very different than anything I ever done. I guess everything we've done in class is all new to me. Yes, we've all done our standard interviews where we ask the person questions and put it down on paper, but with this project we did ask them questions but rather on paper it was on video. It was very difficult to find something or someone that we found interesting. We tried to think of different places and the only place that seemed somewhat interesting was the movie theater. So we thought we would try the Savoy movie theater but they didn't really seem too happy to do anything with us which was fine with us because after thinking about it, that idea kind of sucked. Then at a spur of the moment idea we decided to go to Friar Tuck. I figured since we are college students and love alcohol, why not go learn more about it. It was interesting to learn how their store is set up and when their busiest times of the year are or even which is the most expensive bottle they have there. I think the hardest part of the project was actually putting the movie together. Sean was very useful with this part because I had no idea how to work our video camera since I forgot to charge it the first time we went to record, so I really didn't know much about iMovie. We had difficulties at first because it wasn't working exactly right but after about 15 minutes messing with iMovie, we finally got to work in putting the movie together by having Lisa talk in the beginning and then have her talk and then show a clip of what she is talking about. I would have liked to figure out how to strip the sound and use that while we go through the store, but that was pretty hard to figure out. Sean took the video home and added transitions to the video which was good so it wouldn’t look like we just put a bunch of clips together. We actually had to cut a lot of footage out because we recorded about 9 min. I didn’t think we would be able to even do that because I thought 4-6 minutes was a lot to fulfill. I liked this project a lot. It was something different and we were able to see what happens behind the scenes of place that we thought we knew very well. I didn’t know that they have the wine split by countries or how the rest of the store was set up. It was very different to me and really fascinated me. The person we talked to really loved her job and was actually willing to do the interview with us unlike the people at Savoy. All in all, I’m very pleased with this project and its outcome. I was worried at first because we couldn’t think of anything but I’m glad we decided on Friar Tuck.

Grace's question

2.) What does the author mean when he says, all mediation is remidiation?

From the reading, I feel that the author means that most of the media today is better than the next. Each type of media seems to get better as technology comes around. For example, we started off with a a big radio where people would listen to hour long segments, then the black and white tv came around, then it was color and so on to the point where we have tivo or ondemand to record shows that we have missed. Each form of media is copied by another form of media and presented in a way that is more realistic. It gives people options of what type of media they want to see and I think this is a lot better because it's more creative.

Questions

1. What does the author mean when he says," All current media function as remediators and that remediation offers us a means of interpreting the work of earlier media as well?"

2. Do you think its better certain things are remediated? The author uses MTV as an example states how the audience focuses on other things rather than the product itself. Do you feel the same way?

3. The author states that there are three different types of remediation, Remediation as the mediation of mediation, as the inseparability of mediaton and reality and as reform? Which do you think out of these three is the best type of remediation and why?

Erin's Question

1. Have you ever worked in a group and felt that your identity and ideas were overshadowed by the other group members? How did you overcome this and show your individualism within the group?

There have been many times where I've worked in a group and my ideas have been overshadowed by the other group members. One incidence happened this semester when I was doing my group project for my HDFS class. We were trying to figure out a research question, and I was the only one giving out ideas but each time I suggested an idea they rejected it. So after putting my input in, and no one could come up with an idea they finally agreed on one of my topics. When we actually started working on the project there was one girl that was acting like a bitch and thought she was in control of everything and never wanted to listen to anyone else ideas but her own. In order for me to show my individualism I took charge of the poster because she had no idea what she was talking about. The other group members followed suit and helped me with the poster but when it came down to presenting, no one else still had an idea of what they were talking about. It was a good thing that the teacher graded up when I was presenting because I actually knew what I was talking about. I did the research and helped with the poster to overcome being shadowed by other group members. If I hadn't had done this, I don't think we would have gotten the grade we received.

INTERTEXT
Successful teams, like Tolstoy's happy families, may all seem alike,
friendly and intimate, with partners easily accessible to each other,
but the failures prove how hard collaboration can be. The most
typical obstacle is the inability to discuss and resolve conflict.

I like this intertext because it's definitely true. You can't be successful unless you can say that you had to go through obstacles and keep trying again because life isn't that easy. If it was, then there is something that you missed. In the end the team is successful because they know that they went through to get where they are and that's what matters the most.

This week's QUESTIONS!

1. Andrew Polack states, "Can it be that the notion of individualism, so sacred to the United States, also is its fatal flaw-the basic strength that works against it-
self to reduce strength?" Do you agree or disagree with his statement and give an example to support your answer.

2. Has there ever been a time where you wished you were doing a project individually rather than a group or vice versa? Also, which do you prefer to do?

3. The author states that sometimes ownership gets lost when there are more than one person collaborating on a project together. What problems might occur when two or more writers are working together or when two or more scientists working together? Why is it easier to work together with people when doing plays or movies?

10 Things Assignment

I never really noticed all the different things that I pass everyday and just ignore. Here are some of these things that I saw going home for break and when I was at home...

1.There is a huge crack on my bathroom tile floor that I don't remember being there.

2. My roommate has yet to pick up a piece of paper that is hers on our living room floor.

3. The vent in our bathroom, if it's left on a for awhile, the sound it makes tends to pulse.

4.My clock in my car is not the exact time.

5. My outside door has the name Harry written on it.

6.When I go home my mom always gives me a kiss goodnight when she gets up for work at 2:30am...the only reason I know this is because I'm still somewhat awake from just getting home from the bars.

7. My friend Joe always wears a hat.

8. My sister's hair is getting really long and she needs to get it redyed because you can see her roots.

9. My sister also has become a germaphobe

10. My roommate never locks the door after her which sucks because sometimes I'm still asleep.

11. I never wear my seatbelt

12. My friend Kurt is always texting someone or is always on his phone...

13. There is plastic shot cup that has been sitting in our stairwell to our garage since unofficial that maintenence hasn't cleaned up.

14. As I was packing up my car, I noticed that the car next to me hasn't been there for at least a week.

15. The other car next to me really need to learn how to park because they can't seem to know how to park in the lines.

Answer to David's question!

pg. 57 "Audiences have the perverse habit of assuming that the way they think you are communicating is the way that you intended to communicate. As far as they are concerned, the message they get is the only message there is".

Can you think of an instance when someone misinterpreted something that you were communicating (through art, media, etc.)? Have you misinterpreted someone else? If an audience interprets a piece of art or media differently than the the author intended, is the work a "failure"?

There have been many times where I have misinterpreted someone's art, media or other project. Sometimes when I have gone to art museums, I look at the painting and guess what it is and then look at the name of it. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong because not everyone is going to see the same thing and get what the artist was intending to do. Their work is not a failure by any mean because art has the ability to be interpreted many ways and I always think it is better when it is. Someone might see beyond the picture and it might mean something more than it was suppose to. In this class, I don't expect everyone to understand my projects and see what i see at first but instead get their own meaning or idea of it.

QUESTIONS!

1. With interviews, we need to make sure we are asking the right questions without being bias but sometimes it is hard to do that. How are some ways we can try not to be bias and what are some questions we can ask to still get the response that we need?

2. In the reading, it talks a lot about how we still need to have a good visual representation while doing a documentary. Can we still have a good documentary without sound? or do we still need sound to get the point accross of what we need to say?

3. Are interviews necessary for a documentry? What's the point of interviewing someone?

4. Can two people watch the same thing thing but see two completely different things? Why is that?

Closing Song-WannaBe by Spice Girls

This has to be by far one of the hardest projects I have ever done for school. It's nothing like putting pictures on a poster or doing a power point. I'm not good at electronics at all and to use a mac and garage band on it... it's even harder. At first, I had no idea what I wanted to do and then I started to think of things that I love, and I love reading about celebrities and hearing about entertainment. So I decided to do a talk show with one of my best friends because we're usually crazy together. We could have done some boring radio, talk show but I decided to make it different by making it obnoxious where we say OMG a lot and talk like valley girls or highschool girls. It kind of reminds me of the show on Nickeoloden with Amanda Bynes where she would read letters to herself from fans saying "Dear Amanda, That's me!" It was very repetitive but hilarious. The reason I did this is because it was a lot more fun to be someone else and not just some monotone person. Also, I feel in highschool, that's all girls talk about and concern their life with celebrity gossip shows, or magazines because everything seems to be about reality tv or popular celebs. This show, also reminds me of the crazy and stupid Amber and Amber show on the Bad Girls Club. They are so annoying but yet so funny, so I wanted to just make fun of that in a way too!
I started out listening to different sounds on Garage band and then we recorded our script. The script that I have posted is what we were suppose to follow but sometimes we would be off a word here and there because it would be more realistic or it just came naturally. There were a couple of times where we messed up and I tried to record over it...but I had problems with that but finally figured it out in the end. The other hardest part was to just figure out where to put certain sound effects on at the right time. I don't know why this was so hard for me but it was. I would try and pause it but for some reason it still didn't work with the timing. Also, when I would move things or try and shorten a clip, it would get messed up and cut something out that I didn't want to. It all worked out in the end though, or at least I thought it did. The last thing I had to do, was just upload it to netfiles and then my blog. It was taking forever to upload it to netfiles and then when I tried to put it on my blog, the link went to some other website on netfiles and not just a direct link to my podcast. So hopefully, I got it all figured out! Also, I apologize for the lots of OMG's and the valley girl talking in my podcast :)

....Still having problems with this project where it won't upload correctly. The link still takes you directly to netfiles with the clips all separately and not just one. UGH FML!

Yay! Finally was able to upload it now thanks to Sam! This was a long and frustrating process/project!

Answers

Dan writes....
3. Shipka's class reminds me of this class, WAM! Has this point of view (before this point) been expressed by you before in any of the earlier projects? Did you feel like you have been doing a bunch of different projects to express yourself or have you just been going along with things and just taking each for what it's worth?

I agree that her class reminds me of this class as well. There are so many different things that we have done in this class that I would have never ever thought to do. It's also different because in this class, a lot of the projects are very open-ended and we can do whatever we like. For me, this is good and bad at the same time. I'm very use to structure when it comes to assignments. I need to be told what I'm getting graded on, what exactly we need and so on. But this class has opened my eyes on a lot of things and I've realized that my life doesn't need to follow every little rule or guideline. I've been able to express myself in this class a lot differently than any other class...for example this blog...even though I don't write as much as I would like to, it's still more than I would do normally. Shipka made her students think of different goals that can have with their projects and I thought that was a good idea because it allowed them to express themselves in a way they were not use to, basically how this class makes us. Life is too short has always been my motto and I feel that people need to open up and try new things every day.

Questions

1. Do you prefer projects that are more open ended or projects with more structure to it and why?

2. Shipka talked about two students, Dan and Val, why do you think they changed their mind about their projects so much and do you think in the end they accomplished their goals?

3. Shipka states, "it provides students with a way to begin attending to the variousways a greater variety of senses, modes, and materials might be brought together, if only briefly and if only in sound-for-now ways, to help them accomplish the kind and quality of work they are most invested in pursuing." What do you think goals provide us with?

It's that time again...Answers to Cynthia's Question

McKee states that “silence does not exist,” then she claims that even though noise is absent we feel the presence of silence. Then how would you describe silence, as a feeling or a lack of sound? Give examples.

Even when I'm alone and everything is silent, no tv, no music or anything, I still feel noise but it's a different kind of noise. It's kind of hard to explain but I love the sound of silence. I feel like everything has just stopped and for that brief moment there is a calm, feeling like serenity. It's very peaceful and I don't think there is a lack of sound what so ever. Silence can be one of the most powerful sounds out there even if there is nothing going on. One thing I don't like about it being silent, is that there is never really silence because you can hear almost everything like a clock ticking or crickets outside and those can be some of the most annoying sounds ever. So we can feel the presence of silence but like McKee states, "silence does not exist." I agree with this completely and it is very hard to explain in words but if you take the time to actually listen to silence, you will be able to feel it.

Questions

1. Sound is a big part of our life. Name a time when you turned everything off such as the tv, radio, computer etc. and actually listened to what else is around you. Did you notice a big difference?

2. Have you ever wondered how sound is made? What do u think are the different steps or processes put into making particular sounds in a movie, a song or television show?

3. Have you ever put captioning on when watching a movie or television? Do you find yourself watching the words more or listening to people talk? Why do you think this happens?

My Reactions of Picture Essays

Will-His picture essay has to do with a little girl that likes the color pink and has a lot of toys. I think its kind of a process of her life or rountine in a day because it starts in the morning and works its way through to bedtime. The picture essay was obvious at first but to think of it at another perspective, its nice to see it through what the person is actually seeing.

Sam-After looking at her pictures it looks like all the different places on campus at first but then I was confused when ter ewere a lot of pictures of bikes and coffee. I think the pictures represent her life at U of I and how school spirited she is and the people she has come across with during her time here.

Ryan-When I saw his pictures I thought to myself that he likes taking a lot of pictures of himself because every other picture was him alone. He also knows a lot of girls because there are also girls in almost every picture.

Roberto-I think his pictures were about a day of going to class and then going back to his place and going home to sleep.

Raul- With his pictures, he is documenting his friend's day and what he does through out that day.
Mark- His pictures look cold and remind me of that one poem I think its called footprints in the sand. But his pictures show his footprints in the snow. I think he is on a trip because there was a picture of a hotel that he took.

Octavio- He is capturing himself eating a lot of food while he is sitting at his computer.

Liz-Different parts of the body is what i gathered from her pictures because there are pictures of people's eyes, mouth, fingers and feet. Also different facial expressions or movements are captured.

Grace-Her pictures are of someone that is about to work out or is an athlete because there are weights and vitamins and water.

Erin-I think her pictures had to deal with things that can harm a person or how bad society is.

David- I didn't rally know what to think of his pictures..I feel that his pictures showed a sense of urgency or how fast paced our world is with the pictures of the road and traffic lights.

Bill-His pictures remind me of something enchanted especially when the girl is along side the brick wall or looking through the white pillar shaped towers. Even when she is walking through the rows of trees. It's like a journey of girl that is trying to find herself.

Dan k-It was very different to see pictures that were drawn, like a comic book.. I don't know what kind of story he was trying to tell but I feel like it had to do with how people react with the world and city because there were a bunch of overshots of the city.

Dan B- Its very dark but there are different angles that each picture is taken and i think he is taking pictures of musical instruments like a guitar. His story seems like a night or the process of what goes into a concert or practice.

Cynthia-Her pciture seem to resemble how she has grown up and what she sees in life. She has pictures of sunsets and trees but i don't know how that correlates...It could possibly show how the day goes vs her life.

Adam-He took pictures of a stuffed animal going through situations that people do in real life. it was very interesting to see how he put this animal in the picture.

Sean-I actually know a lot of people in those pictures but it shows him drinking all night and having fun with his friends.

Sara-She took a lot of pictures of famous people and what was cool about it was how she took pictures of magazine pictures. There were different magazines so she showed different advertisements and how each portrayed to that magazine.

Masha-Her pictures start off with taking a wide picture of the scenery and then slowly focusing in on one person. She continues to keep zooming in on this person.

Picture Essay

To be honest, I really don’t know if I liked this project. At first I had no idea what I wanted to do which was my first difficulty of this whole thing. Then when I was out on Tuesday night, I thought it would have been a great idea to document a night out with my friends, but that ended up being a drunken mess and I thought to myself that it would be best to not document that night. The pictures would have been funny though. Then I tried to think of other ideas, but everything that I thought of seemed stupid. I finally came up with documenting my last night working at Buffalo Wild Wings. After 3 long years, it would be great to take pictures of my last closing shift bartending. Well, little did I know there was an Illini game. I was kind of frusterated in the beginning because I was hoping for an easy, laid back last shift, but I was wrong. We ended up being really busy even though it was a low scoring game and we lost. I felt that the pictures I took represented a big part of my college life because the people that I worked with ended up becoming my family along with all the regulars that come in all the time. However, taking pictures from my iphone was not the greatest device to use but I had nothing else since I recently just broke my 2nd camera. I tried to take pictures of things or events that I would come across on a regular shift and not just that night. Everyone thought I was crazy because they had no idea what I was doing until I tried to explain it them. Also, I tried to take more realistic pictures and more actions pictures but it was hard because people would try and pose for the camera.
After reading Berger, I realize where he is coming from when he says, “Images were first made to conjure up the appearances of something that was absent. Gradually became evident that an image could outlast what it represented.” These pictures might not be understood by everyone but to me it means a whole lot more than what meets the eye. It is kind of a conclusion to another chapter in my life because I’ve been there for so long that it was time for me to leave and when I was looking back on these pictures, I was actually sad because it showed the last time I would be closing there. I’ll miss working all the Illini games and being with everyone that I worked with but these pictures to someone else might see something completely different. They might just see random people and signs of beer specials and think nothing of it and probably won’t remember them. Pictures tend to lose their value or uniqueness after awhile too. For example, the picture of the final score of the game was a lot more depressing in the moment and now looking back at the picture, it’s just a bunch of numbers that probably won’t mean anything a week from now. In the end, I’m glad I captured my last night working because it’s pictures that I understand and mean something to me that I wanted to share with others.

Answer to this weeks question!

Bill stated, "With multiple televisions in every home in America, and hundreds of channels to watch, television advertisement has become the main form of advertisement. While people are constantly bombarded with multiple images of different products every 10 to 15 minutes during their television program, new inventions are allowing us to circumvent the need to view commercials. Things such as TIVO or DVR are making it so we can fast forward through commercials, a high school German teacher of mine told me that in Germany the commercials are all condensed into a 5-10 minute block in the middle of the show, like an intermission almost. I am not sure if that is still the way it is done there, but regardless with the way television advertisement is going are we going to see new forms of it? An increase in traditional billboards and public/outdoors advertisement? Will product placement become even more prevalent in shows? One thought I had was a fixed image on the screen for a set period of time, regardless of fast forwarding it will always be there, but it would be a nuisance to those without TIVO so thankfully I think it will be awhile before that occurs!"

Bill has a very good point about how everyone that has TIVO or DVR tends to fast forward through comercials and that we end up seeing less and less advertisements. I know that I'm one of those people that do that and I've noticed in television shows they have begun using product placement through out their shows. For example, with 90210, almost every scene that a character was eating or drinking something, there was can of Dr Pepper on the table or there was an advertisement of it in the background that you could still clearly see. Other shows have also incoporated contests or fundraisers of a product in their show like One Tree Hill having their Sunkist music contest or something of that sort. I feel that we will slowly start seeing more advertisements in shows because people are fast fowarding through comercials and not seeing these advertisements.

I can't think of other forms that televisions will have to show more advertisements and I think that it would be annoying to see a fixed image on the bottom of the screen. I feel that with our economy being so bad, that there might not be an increase of billboards with advertisements or magazine with ads. However, we might see more ads on the internet because I feel that it is easier and cheaper to post something on there. One suggestion that advertisers can do is, post their ads up on the tv guide thing that people have with on demand or whatever they have. At least it will be there and the consumer might happen to catch a glimpse of it.

Q&A week 5

1. Berger states, "The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe." What does he mean by this and give one example.

2. Berger also says "Images were first made to conjure up the appearances of something that was absent. Gradually became evident that an image could outlast what it represented;" Think of one photograph or picture that you see everyday and explain why you think it was taken in the first place, what you see now and lastly what other might see.

3. Think of an image that has been recreated and has lost it's value or uniqueness.

Answer to Bill's Question

1. Reading this article immediately made me think of Chinese Characters. The way I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong, is that they do not have an alphabet, but instead use characters to represent what they are saying. Individuals that learn from this kind of alphabet, or a similar one, do you feel that they are better able to handle the transition to our text books if they come to learn in the states, or anywhere else that uses the "western" form of writing. Basically which is easier going from theres to ours or ours to theres, and what would be some problems/implications in both?

I think it would be a lot easier for us to learn other peoples language because our English language is very difficult to learn because there are so many different syllables or meanings for each word. It may be hard to learn Chinese or any other language for that matter, but I think memorizing or seeing different Chinese characters will be easier to learn for people that already speak English. When my family first came from the Philippines, my grandma would always tell me that is was so hard for her to learn the English language and to this day she still has hard time pronouncing some words. I also found it easier to learn the Spanish language because one letter would only have one way of saying it or it was pretty obvious. Any language will be hard to learn but from what I see going to U of I, there is a language barrier from people that are across the world because they can't speak English but when my friends are taking classes like Arabic or Italian, they seem to learn it pretty quickly.

This week's questions!!

1. Wysocki talks about how each writer or author use their text to catch the audiences eye, when you're in line at the grocery store or at the book store what certain texts or words catch your eye and why? What texts discourge you from reading it?

2. He also talks about how writing has changed over time with size, lettering etc, give examples of these?

3. Children's texts are completely different than young adult texts or even adults texts for that matter, why do you think writer's change their way of writing with each audience? (Honestly I would rather read something that has large text in a children's book with color then an adult text book that is boring and in black and white.)

Graffiti Stencil Project

The University of Illinois is considered to have one of the biggest Greek systems out of all the colleges in the United States. When students first come to college they don’t know what to expect or what clubs to join. For many students joining a fraternity or a sorority is at the top of their list because they are bombarded by members of these chapters on Quad Day or even when they go to parties people usually ask if they are planning on joining one or if they are already in one. But is “Greek life” really what it’s cracked up to be?
For my graffiti stencil I chose to do a statue of a guy sitting and thinking and within it, it says “Go Greek?” I’m currently in a sorority and when I first came to college I thought I had to join one because everyone else was going to as well or all my friends that already went here were in one. I wish I would have put more thought into joining one before I did, but I feel like students on our campus are rushed into these decisions right away since they have to “rush” or join within the first month of school. I had to graffiti my stencil a couple of times because with the letters it was somewhat difficult to keep them white. But in the end, I think it turned out pretty nice. I would display this all around campus especially in the beginning of the school year when people are thinking about what they should become involved in.
I’m not discouraging people from joining a fraternity or a sorority by any means but I want people to just think about their decisions carefully. Yes, joining greek like will introduce you to many new people and for some people, it allows to them have many leadership roles within their house that may look good on their resumes, but there are also many downfalls that students aren’t aware when becoming part of the greek system that they should also consider. For example, you have to pay a lot of money to be in a house and half the time you don’t know where that money is going. Also, when paying for social events, you have to pay those dues whether or not if you go to an event. Many people that aren’t part of a house think that people in the greek system are paying for their friends and at times I can see that because I barely know anyone in the house other than the people in my pledge class. Also, it is very time consuming and there are many mandatory meetings that you must attend and if you don’t attend them you might get fined which sucks to begin with. I feel that since I’m a senior I’ve already vested so much money and time into my sorority, that it would be stupid for me to deactivate, I have had fun during the past four years but if I were to go back to my freshman year all over again and see a sign that said “Go Greek?” I probably would not have joined one.

Graffiti Art

I wasn't able to get a chance and look at graffiti around campus but when I was looking online I personally liked this picture of graffiti in a tunnel...even though some graffiti is bad or it's wrong, it is sometimes tasteful to the eye. I always like looking under bridges or passing buildings while I'm driving and looking at the graffiti because it's better to look at than just a plain wall. This picture just makes it look like something fast just drove by but it's really the sun light shining through and you're able to see the graffiti on the wall.

Q & A Time

Will's question was ....

James Elkins invites us to take a second look at “ordinary” objects that we often ignore because we view these things as commonplace. What are some of the “ordinary” objects from your surroundings that you think deserve a closer examination?

There are many "ordinary" things in my surroundings that need a closer examination and as I walk to class on the quad I think I need to have more of a better look at all the landscape and architecture of the buildings...After four years all I've done is go straight to class, trying to zoom and weave through people so I can get to class in time but I've never actually just sat on the quad and looked at everything around me. I can barely tell you where each building is and I don't even know if there are trees on the quad which makes me kind of sad because I'm graduating in May and I feel like I don't know much about my campus.

Other ordinary things that I come across are even just the appliances in my own apartment. I just use them and never actually take the time to think what I would do without those items. This year was the first year we got dvr in our apartment and honestly I don't know how I lived without it before...I've never thought about how it actually works or why we ever thought about thinking about inventing this...I guess remediation comes into play here. Haha! But anyways other appliances such as the refrigerator or the toaster are just items that we use all the time.

It is so weird that we use all these items everyday and never actually think about them and just continue to use them without a thought!

Questions for reading

I really liked these readings this week because it actually made me think about all the things we pass everyday and don't even take a second glance at it. We see words all over the place and we obey to them like the reading said, like a sign that says STOP or Caution, and then we go about the rest of our day like it never happened. It's weird how we take things for advantage these days, like the sunset or bridges or even grass which is all around us. So my questions this week are....

1. Over the past couple of years that we have been at the U of I, take a look back and think of one thing that you see on a daily basis and never actually thought about it and describe how it makes you feel or what you actually think of it in general. It can be a building, the new bell or anything...

2. They're always those little games that people play where we have to count how many times we see the word "of" or another word, but we always seem to miss one or two of them hidden in the paragraph, why do we do that? Is it because we don't take the time to actually look in between the lines because we're always in such a hurry or do we just miss it on accident?

3. Lastly, when I was reading the two articles it made me think of the wall that is in Washington D.C. with all the names of past soldiers, veterans that have died in the many wars that we have had, do you wonder if people actually think about those names on the wall and think about those lives that have been lost for us or is it just a name on a wall?

Answer to Grace's Remediation Question

1.) In the second reading the author writes, "The desire for immediacy is apparent in the increasing popularity of the digital composting of film and in Hollywood's interest in replacing stunt men and eventually even actors with computer animations." Do you think that computer animations will slowly deteriorate jobs in the film-making industry?

I feel that there will always be a demand for actors because there will always be a group of people that would rather watch the real thing than something animated. As new film industries such as Pixar are creating more animated movies, and creating less work for actors there are still more movies that involve real life people. Even with the action pack movies that have the special effects, the different audiences still have a demand for the different genres of movies. So in a way, yes, computer animations will slowly deteriorate the jobs in the film industry but not as fast as it has with factory based jobs or how the internet has taken over the newspaper industry.
People have different level of interests and also have different experiences when they watch a movie. The film industry keeps coming up with different ways of entertaining people and movies have come a long way from being black and white without any sound. As our economy tends to worsen, the last thing we need is to put more people out of jobs but that’s just my opinion.

Remediation Questions

After doing the readings, many questions ran through my mind...
1. The author talks about the immediacy with the technology today and how it leads to hypermediacy, but what would have happened to our world if there wasn't this immediacy?

2. He talked about how photography took away from the realism of the painting and how it "removed the artist as an agent who stood between the viewer and the reality of the image." Has this happened with other technology where it is still the same but completly different as well?

3. Why is our society so fascinated by the different media and mediation that is in diverse forms technology, such as the television and the world wide web, digital imaging etc?

Remediation Assignment

In our world, everything changes, whether it is for the best for our society or not, people have to find some way to adapt to these changes. The creation of new technology is suppose to make our lives easier. For example, people can now read the news on the internet at their leisure just in case they missed it on television or didn't have the chance to go buy an actual newspaper. We're now able to record television shows with the creation of dvr or tivo instead of using a vcr. All these new creations are here to help us go about our daily lives.

One thing that I feel that has been remediated is the ipod or any other mp3 player. This portable music device has come a long way. Back in the day people would carry a boombox with them if they wanted to listen to music. Then the creation of the cassette player came along so people could walk or run with a headset and listen to their music. After that it was the cd player. This device stayed around for awhile because it was a lot easier to skip to the song you wanted to hear next instead of waiting a long time for the cassette to get to the song.

In 2001, Apple created the ipod. Everyone had to have it because you were able to put all your songs on it and it was very small so you could use it anywhere. As years have progressed, the ipod has come up with different versions where you can watch videos on it, have the screen be in color or the outer part of it be a different color or have it be smaller than anything you have ever seen. Other companies have also tried to follow Apple and create other mp3 players for people to use but Apple keeps coming up with new ideas for the ipod. In the past year, they created the Ipod touch allowing people to have an mp3 player that had a touch screen as well as having many applications added to the device where you can do more than just listen to music. The remediation of the ipod has come along way and has made it a lot easier for people to listen to the music they want to listen to when they want and whereever they want.

My Bio

My name is Teri and I'm from Palatine, IL which is 5 min away from the best place on earth...Woodfield! I'm a senior and finally ready to graduate... I don't really know what I'm going to do after I graduate though. I plan to go to law school after I take a year off. In that year I will either move to California or just to Chicago with my best friend ever Danielle.

There isn't really anything too exciting about me. My friends either call me TO for my initials or LT for little Teri since I'm only 4'11". When I'm back at home I usually just hang out with all my friends and go shopping alot. I pretty much will buy anything I see whether it is on Ebay, online shopping or just being at the mall for all hours of the day. This has contributed to massive amount of debt that I have but having three jobs helps me somewhat pay for it.

Right now I bartend at Buffalo Wild Wings, serve at the piano bar 88 Broadway and I am also a bank teller at Busey. My friends and family think I'm crazy for having so many jobs as well as going to school and partying at night but I love to keep busy. The new thing thing that I am currently doing is training for a half marathon that will be here at U of I. If you want you can sign up here. I'm pretty excited about it because it will be the hardest thing that I have ever done but it will feel great to cross the finish line and you also get a pretty sweet zip-up...so that's awesome in itself!

I'm a very friendly person, however at times I can be kinda bitchy but everyone can be like that. I love meeting new people and I think that is why I have so many jobs because even in highschool I would always have 2-3 jobs as well. I guess you can say I'm very well rounded and pretty much am up for trying new things. This summer I just started to rock climb and this winter I also learned to snowboard.

Other than working, I love going to concerts and listening to music. I pretty much love everything. Some of my favorite people or bands is Britney, Justin, Lil Wayne, Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey's McGee, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Phish, Moe, Taylor Swift, Girl Talk and many more. I just went to Girl Talk the other night and it was pretty much one of the best nights of my life. Last year I went to Summer Camp which is a 3day music festival with so many different bands and I plan on going again this year. If you want to go, you can buy tickets here. Believe me you won't regret this experience.

When I'm not doing anything, and I'm finally just relaxing on my couch, I sit on facebook and basically can be on it all night just creeping on people. Or I'm catching up on the latest celeb gossip on perez. I also watch a lot of tv. I love all the reality shows on mtv or vh1 and then pretty much watch everything on the CW like Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill. I'm pretty much obsessed and can't miss an episode even if I'm watching dvr at 2 in the morning when I get off of work.

I guess that is pretty much it about myself...if you need to know anything just ask!
