Erin's Question

1. Have you ever worked in a group and felt that your identity and ideas were overshadowed by the other group members? How did you overcome this and show your individualism within the group?

There have been many times where I've worked in a group and my ideas have been overshadowed by the other group members. One incidence happened this semester when I was doing my group project for my HDFS class. We were trying to figure out a research question, and I was the only one giving out ideas but each time I suggested an idea they rejected it. So after putting my input in, and no one could come up with an idea they finally agreed on one of my topics. When we actually started working on the project there was one girl that was acting like a bitch and thought she was in control of everything and never wanted to listen to anyone else ideas but her own. In order for me to show my individualism I took charge of the poster because she had no idea what she was talking about. The other group members followed suit and helped me with the poster but when it came down to presenting, no one else still had an idea of what they were talking about. It was a good thing that the teacher graded up when I was presenting because I actually knew what I was talking about. I did the research and helped with the poster to overcome being shadowed by other group members. If I hadn't had done this, I don't think we would have gotten the grade we received.

INTERTEXT
Successful teams, like Tolstoy's happy families, may all seem alike,
friendly and intimate, with partners easily accessible to each other,
but the failures prove how hard collaboration can be. The most
typical obstacle is the inability to discuss and resolve conflict.

I like this intertext because it's definitely true. You can't be successful unless you can say that you had to go through obstacles and keep trying again because life isn't that easy. If it was, then there is something that you missed. In the end the team is successful because they know that they went through to get where they are and that's what matters the most.

This week's QUESTIONS!

1. Andrew Polack states, "Can it be that the notion of individualism, so sacred to the United States, also is its fatal flaw-the basic strength that works against it-
self to reduce strength?" Do you agree or disagree with his statement and give an example to support your answer.

2. Has there ever been a time where you wished you were doing a project individually rather than a group or vice versa? Also, which do you prefer to do?

3. The author states that sometimes ownership gets lost when there are more than one person collaborating on a project together. What problems might occur when two or more writers are working together or when two or more scientists working together? Why is it easier to work together with people when doing plays or movies?

Answer to David's question!

pg. 57 "Audiences have the perverse habit of assuming that the way they think you are communicating is the way that you intended to communicate. As far as they are concerned, the message they get is the only message there is".

Can you think of an instance when someone misinterpreted something that you were communicating (through art, media, etc.)? Have you misinterpreted someone else? If an audience interprets a piece of art or media differently than the the author intended, is the work a "failure"?

There have been many times where I have misinterpreted someone's art, media or other project. Sometimes when I have gone to art museums, I look at the painting and guess what it is and then look at the name of it. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong because not everyone is going to see the same thing and get what the artist was intending to do. Their work is not a failure by any mean because art has the ability to be interpreted many ways and I always think it is better when it is. Someone might see beyond the picture and it might mean something more than it was suppose to. In this class, I don't expect everyone to understand my projects and see what i see at first but instead get their own meaning or idea of it.

QUESTIONS!

1. With interviews, we need to make sure we are asking the right questions without being bias but sometimes it is hard to do that. How are some ways we can try not to be bias and what are some questions we can ask to still get the response that we need?

2. In the reading, it talks a lot about how we still need to have a good visual representation while doing a documentary. Can we still have a good documentary without sound? or do we still need sound to get the point accross of what we need to say?

3. Are interviews necessary for a documentry? What's the point of interviewing someone?

4. Can two people watch the same thing thing but see two completely different things? Why is that?

Closing Song-WannaBe by Spice Girls

This has to be by far one of the hardest projects I have ever done for school. It's nothing like putting pictures on a poster or doing a power point. I'm not good at electronics at all and to use a mac and garage band on it... it's even harder. At first, I had no idea what I wanted to do and then I started to think of things that I love, and I love reading about celebrities and hearing about entertainment. So I decided to do a talk show with one of my best friends because we're usually crazy together. We could have done some boring radio, talk show but I decided to make it different by making it obnoxious where we say OMG a lot and talk like valley girls or highschool girls. It kind of reminds me of the show on Nickeoloden with Amanda Bynes where she would read letters to herself from fans saying "Dear Amanda, That's me!" It was very repetitive but hilarious. The reason I did this is because it was a lot more fun to be someone else and not just some monotone person. Also, I feel in highschool, that's all girls talk about and concern their life with celebrity gossip shows, or magazines because everything seems to be about reality tv or popular celebs. This show, also reminds me of the crazy and stupid Amber and Amber show on the Bad Girls Club. They are so annoying but yet so funny, so I wanted to just make fun of that in a way too!
I started out listening to different sounds on Garage band and then we recorded our script. The script that I have posted is what we were suppose to follow but sometimes we would be off a word here and there because it would be more realistic or it just came naturally. There were a couple of times where we messed up and I tried to record over it...but I had problems with that but finally figured it out in the end. The other hardest part was to just figure out where to put certain sound effects on at the right time. I don't know why this was so hard for me but it was. I would try and pause it but for some reason it still didn't work with the timing. Also, when I would move things or try and shorten a clip, it would get messed up and cut something out that I didn't want to. It all worked out in the end though, or at least I thought it did. The last thing I had to do, was just upload it to netfiles and then my blog. It was taking forever to upload it to netfiles and then when I tried to put it on my blog, the link went to some other website on netfiles and not just a direct link to my podcast. So hopefully, I got it all figured out! Also, I apologize for the lots of OMG's and the valley girl talking in my podcast :)

....Still having problems with this project where it won't upload correctly. The link still takes you directly to netfiles with the clips all separately and not just one. UGH FML!

Yay! Finally was able to upload it now thanks to Sam! This was a long and frustrating process/project!

Answers

Dan writes....
3. Shipka's class reminds me of this class, WAM! Has this point of view (before this point) been expressed by you before in any of the earlier projects? Did you feel like you have been doing a bunch of different projects to express yourself or have you just been going along with things and just taking each for what it's worth?

I agree that her class reminds me of this class as well. There are so many different things that we have done in this class that I would have never ever thought to do. It's also different because in this class, a lot of the projects are very open-ended and we can do whatever we like. For me, this is good and bad at the same time. I'm very use to structure when it comes to assignments. I need to be told what I'm getting graded on, what exactly we need and so on. But this class has opened my eyes on a lot of things and I've realized that my life doesn't need to follow every little rule or guideline. I've been able to express myself in this class a lot differently than any other class...for example this blog...even though I don't write as much as I would like to, it's still more than I would do normally. Shipka made her students think of different goals that can have with their projects and I thought that was a good idea because it allowed them to express themselves in a way they were not use to, basically how this class makes us. Life is too short has always been my motto and I feel that people need to open up and try new things every day.

Questions

1. Do you prefer projects that are more open ended or projects with more structure to it and why?

2. Shipka talked about two students, Dan and Val, why do you think they changed their mind about their projects so much and do you think in the end they accomplished their goals?

3. Shipka states, "it provides students with a way to begin attending to the variousways a greater variety of senses, modes, and materials might be brought together, if only briefly and if only in sound-for-now ways, to help them accomplish the kind and quality of work they are most invested in pursuing." What do you think goals provide us with?
